Lion Creature Canopy 'Roars' into Priors Court School, Thatcham

06 September 2013

Hot on the wings of the Ladybird installed at Kingswood prep is 'Larry' the Lion!

Roaring into Priors Court School he provides the centrepiece in a new outdoor learning and play space for the children at the specialist autism school.

He had earned his nickname before we had even left site and drew quite a crowd of admirers during the installation.

Good luck Larry!

Creature Canopies in Learning Spaces Magazine

24 October 2012

We love our Creature Canopies and we get that warm fuzzy feeling when other people tell us that they love them too!

So, we were delighted to receive an email from Graham Hanscombe, the editor of Learning Spaces magazine to say that our Creatures would be featuring in the latest edition Learning Spaces Magazine!

Learning Spaces magazine looks at how schools are attempting to improve their environments for learning. Using exciting case studies of new and refurbished schools it looks at the most creative attempts to match design with new developments in teaching and learning.

With skin cancer rates on the up and many children suffering sunburn at school it has never been more important to create outdoor sheltered and shaded areas. But why make these children's shelters so boring?! We didn't want to and so our Creature Canopy range was born!

Offering a unique, innovative and most importantly fun approach to children’s shelter, the fabric canopies also have huge potential for cross curricular learning.

Hay Festival 2012 putting Creature Canopies on the map

22 June 2012

Well, we're sad to say it's all over at Hay Festival for another year.

Our Creature Canopies had a brilliant week at the festival, made lots of friends read lots of books and even made it onto both the Hay and Hay Fever Festival maps!  (Although we think the lion may have actually eaten a small child and the odd dog or two but we decided we'd better keep quiet about that!!).

With the weather being somewhat unpredictable, our ladybird, lion and elephant canopies provided shelter for children, parents and book loving festival goers in the rain or sun (and sometimes both the rain and sun at the same time!).

The Creature Canopies from Hay are now available for rent or for sale at a huge discount!

Contact us for more details but be quick as at these prices these super children's canopies won't be around for long!

Our thanks to Hay Festival ( and photographer Kate Hayward for the pictures.

Ali Sparkes reads under Creature Canopies

06 June 2012

Acclaimed children's author, blue peter book winner and all round legend Ali Sparkes braved the cold and damp Welsh weather to read some extracts to some hardy children from her fabulous SWITCH books yesterday at Hay Festival.

A captivated audience listened to Ali's fantastically fabulous and magically monstrous stories while sheltered under our very own and quite apt Creature Canopies.

Our thanks go to Ali and family for a truly memorable experience for some very lucky children.

Sneak preview of the Creature Canopies at Hay Festival...

30 May 2012

Just landed yesterday... three bright, colourful and fun Creature Canopies for Hay Festival!

Featuring a lion, ladybird and an elephant. The Creatures will provide some much needed protection from the Sun (and rain - it is Wales after all!) The Creatures are in the family garden area just outside the 'make & take' tent. Look out for the ladybirds on the festival map.

All three Creatures are looking for good homes after the festival and will be available to buy (at a reduced rate) or to hire.

Normally installed onto a concrete base hidden below ground we developed a special system for Hay Festival that allowed the single masted Creatures to be installed on the greenfield site with no groundwork’s or concrete. When the structures are removed it will be like they've never been there!

Don't forget we have some fabulous children’s authors set to read under the canopies so come and see us if you can. Oh, and bring some food.... the Lion looks hungry... Rrrroooooaaaarrrrr!!!!

Tensile Solutions launches 'Creature Canopies' a World exclusive!

18 January 2012

Tensile Solutions Ltd launches Creature Canopies, a World exclusive in safe, outdoor play for children

A recent survey revealed that around 40% of school age children experience sunburn whilst at school. In response NICE has advised that suitable structures to help children seek shade may help reduce their UV exposure. Tensile Solutions ( based in Herefordshire have designed and engineered a unique range of ‘Creature Canopies’ that provide 100% UV protection, in a series of fun designs that children will love to play under. This range is the first of its kind in the world and launches in January 2012, ready for international installation.

Having two young children themselves, directors Sam and Heather Walker fully understand the importance of sun protection.  Sam Walker explains:

“With young children it is vital to get outside as much as possible and we need to be so careful with their skin care. The UK seasons are quite extraordinary at the moment with 2011 bringing one of the warmest Aprils for over 300 years and a summer that was 25% wetter than normal. Our new Creature Canopy range enables children to play outside safely, whatever the weather in the UK and internationally.”

The ‘Creature Canopies’ are bright and appealing to children with a choice of a ladybird, bee, monster and a caterpillar walkway which can all be designed in school colours if requested. The canopies come with a 10 year guarantee* and have full engineering to meet all local weather conditions and are also 100% waterproof. They provide an attractive and essential addition to the school playground, nursery, public park, festival site and other similar locations.

The first installation of a Creature Canopy was at Eastington primary school in Gloucestershire. This was met with huge enthusiasm by children, staff and parents alike. “It is colourful and attractive but also very functional, as the material will block harmful UV rays in the Summer. The children are very excited about it and it has become a real focal point for the playground,” says Malcolm Strang, Headteacher.

*structure must be maintained by an approved company in accordance with its maintenance manual. Visit for more details.
